After Eve finishes her Ph.D. in particle physics, she is thrilled to obtain a post-doctoral fellowshiip at CERN. At CERN, Eve meets and begins to date another postdoc, Howard Anderly. Howard is fascinated with philosophy and parallel universes, and Eve discovers that when the accelerator wasn't running, Howard sometimes snuck into the collider tunnels to meditate. He says the tunnel atmosphere is both peaceful and energizing. One day, an engineer working in the tunnel discovers Howard dead of radiation. However, the collider's 24/7 security tapes show no record of Howard entering the tunnel and no record of anyone starting the accelerator. Not long after, another postdoc, Niels Thorne is found dead--drowned in the CERN's xenon tank. Another postdoc, who was secretly Niels' lover, gives Sabine a memory stick that Niels had given him shortly before he died. Sabine and her helper eventually decode the memory stick to hear a recording of Chloe Grimmaud, head of CERN's ATLAS division, talking to Simon de Vries, head of CERN's CMS division. The conversation reveals that Chloe and Simon are secretely lovers, and they have been providing research data to Russia. Chloe and Simon manage to escape to Russia before the police can stop them. Not as good as Dan Brown's "Angels and Demons" but similar. |

Kauser grew up in Bengalor, India, but her parents married her to an Indian man, an MD, living in Canada. The marriage was happy and produced two sons and one daughter. Kauser's husband died from cancer a year before the story begins. Kausers son, Adam, is a London barrister, and her daughter, Sani, lives in Toronto with her husband and two daughters.
Kauser's younger son, Ali, died a victim of a hit and run while Kauser and her husband lived in Toronto. As a result of Ali's death, Kauser went into depression and culdn't bear Toronto so her husband accepted a medical appointment in North Bay, and Kauser has lived there ever since.
Kauser receives a phone call from her daughter saying that Sani has been arrested for murdering her shop's landlord--he was found in Sani's shop and was stabbed with scissors with only Sani's fingerprints on the scissors. Kauser flies to Toronto to care for her granddaughters, and Kauser eventually discovers who really stabbed the landlord, and Sani goes free. Kauser discovers that Toronto is no longer unbearable, and she moves there to be near her family.
Super excellent reading but two dislikes: story begins with murder victim's thoughts as he is dying, and I didn't like whodunnit. |

Eleanor works at SOE during WWII. Because male spies sent by SOE into France are so easy to spot (all the French men are in the military), Eleanor convinces SOE to send women operatives into France to make contact with the French Resistance, operate radio contact, and perform sabotage. Eleanor is assigned to recruit, train, and be contact for the operatives. Marie is one the SOE operatives who goes into France, and she dies there. Eleanor discovers that these women operatives had been betrayed to the Germans, and that SOE top people knew about the betrayer, but SOE management did nothing about the leak because they could use the channel to feel misinformation to the Germans. After the war ends, Eleanor investigates what happened to the missing women, but she dies in a traffic accident before she can expose the leak. Grace finds some of the clues, and she searches until she finds the answers, and she provides the leak information to Parliament. |
